What I've Learned

When approaching writing your resume, designing your LinkedIn profile, interviewing, and networking you should consider things from the employers perspective rather than your own. Rather than considering your desire for a job of certain qualities, consider instead what value you can provide to the people you are interacting with. So rather than thinking "I want a job fixing computers", think instead "I can provide value to potential employers by doing a great job of fixing their computers for them".

In searching for a job, it's important to develop a brand. What is unique about you? What can you do that other people aren't able to do? What's unique about the way the you do it? And most importantly are there any unique results you generate that other people who can do the same sort of work don't provide? In my own case I know that I am very cognizant of the skills and strengths of people on my team, and I am able to help them to learn and grow their skills by assigning them tasks that are just challenging enough to keep them evolving. I did just this when I trained a team from India on how to program in Python and PowerShell from scratch in my job at Wipro working for Nestle.

Another key thing that I am learning is how helpful AI can be in conducting a job search. You can ask it to review your resume and make suggestions for improvement. You can ask it to generate ideas on activities you can perform that would help enhance your brand. You can ask it for a list of questions that would be relevant to ask in a interview with a given company, taking into account the way the job posting is written. You can ask it for smart questions to ask someone you are thinking of networking with based on their LinkedIn profile.

A final valuable piece to the Higher Landing program is the value of being able to discuss with a group of peers about job search strategies and lessons learned.
